Dr. Anne Berk is now certified on the BlephEx procedure, a breakthrough treatment for dry eye disease and blepharitis that will improve patient comfort while making the eyelids and lashes cleaner and healthier. It is a simple, 20 minute, in-office microblepharoexfoliation (MBE) procedure that is performed directly by the doctor. The treatment effectively removes bacterial biofilm (microorganism substances that accumulate over the years) from the surface of the lid margin and glands that aid in the production of natural tears.
How will it help dry eye and blepharitis patients? BlephEx® treatment will reduce or alleviate chronic and debilitating symptoms. By eliminating the inflammatory etiology of dry eye disease and blepharitis, the overall health of the eyelid is improved. You can then begin producing more of your own natural tears and enjoy significant relief from the chronic and irritating symptoms associated with dry eye disease and blepharitis.
Just like your dentist removes plaque during a routine teeth cleaning visit, BlephEx® MBE treatments need to be repeated at regular intervals depending on the severity of the disease. After your procedure, Dr. Anne will instruct you on what you will do at home to maintain the clean lids and lashes over time. If your symptoms return, you may benefit from repeat treatment, as damaged Meibomian glands in the lids need assistance over time, to keep them clean and clear.
BlephEx is a painless procedure (although it may tickle!). Patients generally experience an immediate improvement in comfort and reduction of red eye. Management that you may currently be doing, such as artificial tears and lid scrubs, will be more effective after the layers of biofilm are removed, and symptoms such as irritation and red eye will be reduced.
The medical visit to diagnose whether the procedure will be beneficial, and the photography to document eyelid and lash status may be billable to your medical insurance. The BlephEx treatment, however, is not a billable procedure. The cost is $250, and includes products to use at home to maintain your eyelid health.
